A few weeks back, Marcus Taylor published an article called When Will My Band Be Famous?, which was a look at the difference between the ‘lucky musician’ and the ‘proactive musician’.
For many, the lucky musician sounds like the better choice... but unfortunately, if you are reading this, your probably are not all that ‘lucky’ of a musician.
But don’t fret...
Being a proactive musician does not need to require super-human levels of involvement or effort. In fact, many of the simple things you already do on a daily basis can be tweaked to proactively help you in your music career.
So Marcus and I have teamed up and we pose a challenge:
We want YOU to help us create a list of 100 New Years Resolutions for the proactive musician. The ideas should not be these crazy antics or techniques that could work in theory, but may just end up being time wasters. No. These ideas should be simple ways for you to step-up your game as a proactive musician in the most realistic, simple ways possible.
What is the purpose of this challenge you ask?
To hopefully inspire you with ideas that will help you to build more fans. And as a cool incentive, Marcus has offered to create an infographic featuring the best of your submissions to be hosted on a variety of music industry websites and blogs:
.png)
If your idea is chosen as one of the best, then your name will be featured along with the idea on the infographic.
We have started the list for you to get the creative juices flowing! Below is a list of the first 50 ideas needed to get to 100.
Please leave your ideas in the form of a comment below.
Note: there is no limit to the amount of ideas you can contribute. If you’ve got ‘em, we want ‘em!
1.) Wake up five minutes earlier each day and read one music promotion blog post in that extra time.
2.) Clear out your apartment and put your junk on ebay, invest your earnings in music promotion resources or knowledge.
3.) Use Stayfocusd (a social network timer) and reduce your wasted time on Facebook by 1 minute each day for a month.
4.) Send a thank you email to one person who inspires you a day (regardless of how high profile they are).
5.) Download music marketing audiobooks and listen to them during your work commute.
6.) Get a stopwatch, and set it to 15 minutes, decide on a task that might usually take 30 minutes or so and turn off all distractions and start the stop watch, do the task.
7.) Buy a Flip Camera and upload 5 videos a month (interviews, live gigs, studio sesh's).
8.) Attend at least one show a month of another band with a similar fan base to your own. Study the fans, Study the performance.
9.) Add 30 new fans to your mailing list a month. That’s only one per day.
10.) Set aside an extra 20 minutes a day for practicing scales and techniques.
11.) No more spamming! For every 1 self-promotional status update/ tweet, you need to post 3 non-promotional ones. The quarter rule... learn it, love it. It will save your life.
12.) Set up Google alerts for: your Name and your Band Name and monitor them on a weekly basis.
13.) Find one thing per month, whether it is a download, a video, etc. to give away to yours fans FOR FREE.
14.) EVERY DAY you should set yourself a to-do list with 5-8 tasks max. It's impossible for most people to accomplish more than that in a day. Don't stress yourself out with the impossible.
15.) Write 50 songs in 90 days.
16.) Dedicate an hour before / after your set to meet and build relationships with as many fans as possible (opposed to boozing up!).
17.) Spend an extra night a week socializing with new people - whether it's in a bar, at a gym, or at an activities club.
18.) Identify the 50 most influential bloggers / writers in your genre and try to virtually meet at least 5/month.
19.) Selflessly promote one other artist in your genre each week (even if it's just a tweet saying they're awesome).
20.) Run a fundraising charity campaign and try to get in the local newspaper.
21.) Setup a Facebook advertising campaign.
22.) Write a guest post for a blog offering some sort of advice.
23.) Identify the most important musician/ band in your local scene (with the same following as you, of course) and open for them.
24.) Write an effective elevator pitch.
25.) Learn one new cover song a week.
26.) Spend one day a month in a new city to experience new local music for inspiration.
27.) Make stepping outside of your comfort zone a weekly or even daily habit.
28.) Work on your mental and physical fitness, the knock on effect will improve your confidence, social skills, creativity in songwriting, motivation and general positivity towards your music career.
29.) Don't focus too hard on only meeting 'music industry contacts' - make a habit of switching hairdressers, talking to anyone at the gym, and attending social events to broaden your general networking skills.
30.) Invest in your self improvement, by being happier with yourself you will become naturally highly motivated, helping you with your music.
31) Host a UStream Q&A session once a month in order to engage fans and strengthen their dedication.
32) Perform at one non-traditional venue every month to help you reach new potential fans.
33) Listen to one new album (‘new’ meaning one you have never heard before) per week to help you get inspired in new ways.
34) Start a blog and post once a week. If you already have a blog, post an additional post every week.
35) Design two separate t-shirt designs, as to give yours fans the option of purchasing one or the other (or both), not just hoping they will purchase the one.
36) Set a realistic budget for a music video, subtract 100 dollars and make the video with that new budget. Put the 100 dollars towards another aspect of your promotional strategy.
37) Try one new music promotion service / website out each month.
38) Fix all legal gaps in your music career - if you don’t have a band agreement in place or a producer contract with your producer, get it fixed!
39) Attend a music conference you’ve never been to before.
40) Internationalize your contacts. Find out artists in your genre in a new country and reach out to them - invite them to a Skype session.
41) Create a squeeze page on your website that offers a free download of an unreleased song for an email address.
42) Create a music video that is comprised solely of images submitted by fans. This is cheap and empowering.
43) Create a week-long Virtual PR Tour on blogs
44) Sort out your Mailling list by location to help better target the right fans when performing in different areas.
45) Perform 4 shows in 1 month, all with a completely unique setlist (never repeating the same song).
46) Create a unique fan-participation aspect of your live show.
47) If you’ve got a blog, increase your RSS subscriptions by 30 every month.
48) Create a relationship with one new music blogger a month. Make sure to target bloggers who can actually help you.
49) Make sure your entire band reflects the same image.
50) Meet and network with one new band in your local scene per month.
Now It's Your Turn!
Please add your own ideas below and help us get to 100! And remember... the best ones will be added to our infographic along with your name (and possible even logo)!
I understand and respect your clear-cut points. I’m impressed with your writing style and how nicely you express your thoughts.
#51 Create a survey using SurveyMonkey or similar service to learn more about your fans and ask them how you can make their experience better.
#52 Try out new music discovery methods (streaming services, blogs, social networks, youtube videos, etc) to educate yourself on all the different ways people stumble across music.
#53 Launch a funding campaign using Kickstarter, Pledgemusic, or a similar service to create something cool (ie. limited edition vinyl pressing) for your fans that you could not afford to create otherwise.
great stuff Chris, thanks for contributing (and sponsoring)!!
Before you go out and seek promotional opportunites and duties, look and listen closely to the music you have written and compare its relevence and performance to those already established. You should feel as comfortable listening to your music as you would your favorite artists. If you do not, work hard on crafting quality material. Build a strong musical backbone and seek out feedback on your work from legitimate professionals. You only burden the listener if you put yourself our there prematurely.
Thanks for the contribution Mike! I saw your feature on Tight Mix yesterday… LOVE your music man! Feel free to email me at jon.ostrow@miccontrol.com any time.
Here are a few of my "tricks":
54) Use Boomerang for Gmail to "snooze" non-urgent emails.
55) Create a "check-in" bookmarks folder for sites you only need to visit once a week (MySpace, Last.fm, OurStage, Grooveshark, etc).
56) Make four different Facebook ads at $1/day. After a month, eliminate the three weakest and replace them with three new ones.
love 'em Brian! I've never even heard of Boomerang but I will absolutely be checking those out. The check in folder is also a great idea! Thanks for joining in!
Yeah boomerang is also great for scheduling emails in advance
Great post guys. Here are some other ideas.
- Learn one new idea on your instrument every single day.
This can be a short riff, an entire song, a new scale…anything! It's an effective way to keep yourself motivated while practicing.
- Release one new song a month.
This will go a long way to keep your fans interested and to get yourself into the mode of constantly creating new content.
- Read one music marketing blog post per week.
Make sure to take notes and take action on any ideas that are right for you and your music.
- Put on at least one major show sometime during the year.
Secure a venue, book the other bands, sell tickets, do the marketing and learn how the entire process works. It's an invaluable learning experience.
Re: Release one song a month…. YES! This is a great idea and is something that I have personally seen work time and time again. In fact, I've seen some artists take this to the next level and release a track a week for so many weeks. Id recommend making sure you've got some blog connects before trying this though, cause if you do, this could create some serious buzz as your music continues to get featured all over the net week after week.
Re: putting on a major show….. again, YES! There are so many aspects of putting on a big show that most people (certainly me) don't know about or understand. Even if the show was not a total success, it would be, as you said, an invaluable learning experience for sure!
Thanks for contributing, and sponsoring Mike!
Jon
Here are some things I have done…
write, produce and upload a new song a week for a year
put on a major show that is a fundraiser. That way everyone wins.
once a week leave the house for an hour without access to the internet
run a local songwriter's circle
write a song for a cause and be part of that charity (mine is Relay for Life)
love the songwriters circle idea Helen! How did you go about meeting those other songwriters? Is that something that you set up online or did you go out and network in person? Maybe both?
Thanks!
Jon
Oh thats great! Almost like a critique circle in an art studio, when people can try out new things and get third-party feedback on how you can improve each piece. That must be a KILLER way to learn the ins and outs of songwriting!
the great thing is that you learn, but often get a chance to give back too!
If you ever find yourself in a music store, take the time to look at the song titles. Watch and see what people do when they're browsing through CD's. You might notice that some song titles are more attractive than others. You could even take a risk by asking a random person why a particular song title catches their eye. Then, go back home, and write down what you learned.
Great advice Sophia! Thanks for contributing your idea!
**Increase your network through a system of “constructive and regular“ commenting and replying on various blogs (not just music specific). (NOT spamming or “yo’ check my myspace!” comments!)
**Listen to well-received/well-crafted music that is NOT your preferred genre to play or even listen to. Perhaps even a style you don’t even like. Try to find elements you appreciate, which in turn, increases your own creative possibilities within your played style. See what promotion techniques they use that you might not have thought of.
Obviously I completely agree about the blog networking. I also really appreciate the idea of getting outside of your comfort zone and pushing yourself to explore as a musician. Nice! Thanks Apyrl!
I didn't read the comments, but here are 20 I'd like to share. Sorry, once I got going I could not stop.
#1 Throw a non-music event for your fans. It's one thing to get to know them on social media, over email, Skype, and anything online. Your connection to them can be made stronger in person. So leave your instrument at home and get them together. They'll also meet each other too and feel part of a community.
#2 For each daily goal you have, there is more than one distraction to throw you off course. Distractions are excuses for why you're not accomplishing what you want to do. Observe yourself each day and be conscious of what throws you off course each time. Create a system for yourself that rewards avoiding distractions.
#3 Sleep is important. Don't lose sleep every single day, because it adds up and eventually it becomes a liability on how you function.
#4 Have an adaptive music/business plan. In other words, have a direction for your plan in mind, but be aware there are factors that will throw you off the course you wanted to set. Just find another way to lead you in the same direction.
#5 If you're doing music just for the money, that mind set won't get you very far anymore. The new musician is genuine, unselfish, and wants to share their art. Yes, do your best to get paid. But setting a priority of demanding and commanding money every time from your art will drive people away.
#6 A quote from a fellow musician I know, "don't put a deadline on your art. It's art, it ebbs and it flows, and it's done when it wants to be done. Put a deadline on it, it may not be done and you'll regret putting unfinished art out there."
#7 Knowing who you are at your core will allow you to be realistic and honest in your decisions.
#8 Don't be afraid to spend extra money you weren't planning on spending to get something vital for your career done. Some skills you may not possess. You can teach yourself, but time and quality is of the essence in some instances.
#9 Guide your music career via passion and never fear. Fear is a mind-killer. It will tell you something is always wrong, not good enough, that you're being judged harshly, and that you should quit. Let your passion win you over every time, it will overcome these taunts fear throws at you.
#10 Don't go up to people you're just meeting at a show and say, "want to buy my music or sign my email list or tip me". Engage them first. Ask them about who they are. Then ease into selling yourself.
#11 At a networking event (or any situation with people really), pretend you're in your house and be the host. In this way, when you meet others you'll leave the impression that you're welcoming and grateful to have met them.
#12 Educate yourself on the big picture called the 'music industry'. Learn the trends, observe the interactions, and emmerce yourself in it, because guess what–you are part of the music industry (even if you're not big)!
#13 Don't get discouraged if someone really doesn't like your music or style. If it's not for them move on, don't waste your time trying to convince them they like you.
#14 Stop only posting shows to your social media sites and in your newsletter. It's boring, predictable, and people will un-follow/friend/subscribe from you. These are tools meant to connect, so have a two way conversation. Stop telling them what to do and ask them questions to start conversations, even if it has nothing to do with you or your music.
#15 When you release an album, do have a CD version available. CD sales may be declining, but not everyone has bought into digital downloading music either.
#16 Credit card swipers for smart phones will save you from dragging around cash or having to run to the bar for change when someone wants to buy something from you.
#17 Every once in a while, do a benefit show for a non-profit or a cause. Whatever you believe in. And don't take any money from it.
#18 Be prepared to see Myspace vanish this year. Get your own music website set up!
#19 Know that there is a lot of content, advice, new tools, strategies, and so forth everyday in the music world. You won't have time to keep up on all of it and that is okay. You're only human and can't know everything.
#20 When you comment on a blog post, leave your signature that includes your name, website, and twitter handle, like below.
Thanks to all the wonderful folks at the above music places for starting this post!
Brian Franke, Singer/Songwriter http://www.brianfranke.com
@bfrankemusic http://www.brianfranke.com/thinkingaloud
Well hot damn! Thanks for all of these ideas Brian! #5 is crucial… you have to be genuine. Couldn't agree more. #13 is a hard one for a lot of artists to take, myself included, but it's very true. And not just that, but you don't really WANT everyone to like your music – if you cater to a specific crowd, you will most likely end up with stronger, more dedicated fans who love your specific style instead of a ton of fans who just like what your doing.
and of course #18 is quite important as well. Get over myspace… it's dead. move on.
Keep a close relationship with your fans and allow them to get to know you! You will realize that people like to help their friends more than just some artist they happen to like. The more you let them get to know you the more they will support you. Your success will be their business.
For my third album fans who helped fund it got their name in the booklet, and my new upcoming EP is entirely fan-funded. There are great sites for this like pledge music. I'm also planning a tour and lots of my fans have signed up to host house concerts. Your fans are your most important promoters. Never forget that!
I might add some more tips later
'Your success will be their business'
Love it Sofia! This is spot on.
Make an impact at SXSW 2011! http://bit.ly/truediy10
always a good idea
* Listen to something new at least once a week.
* Take part in February Album Writing Month and write 14 songs in 28 days.
* if gigs are hard to come by in your area, keep your hand in by doing "sofa gigs" in friend's living rooms (a sort of musical tupperware party, if you will). Or make ten minute sofa gig broadcasts for YouTube.
* Take time once a month to tackle a technical skill that perhaps you've been lacking – learn how to make a podcast, or become familiar with that complicated new recording software that you've been putting off using because your old one is much more "safe".
* Leave cake out for your Muse, he or she will appreciate it
Thanks Casee, I love the idea of the 'sofa gig', which is really a great way to give your fans (or even friend w/ potential to become fans) a close and intimate setting to display your music. Could certainly make it easier to achieve that 'emotional connection' through your music.
This is fantastic! I feel like leaving this page open in a separate tab and revisiting some of these ideas every day for the next few months! Thank you everyone who contributed!
Thanks Aaron! Thats a great idea – While it will continue to be available to everyone in the MicSchool section of the site, I will try to find a way to make it as easy to access as possible.
So after reading all of these, I felt like most of my ideas were covered, but I'm gonna post them anyway
- Set a WAY higher standard for yourself in absolutely everything (from music and visual art to email communications and blog posts) – if it isn't strikingly extraordinary – refine/rewrite/hire someone to help.
- Once a song is "on the verge of completion" start playing it out (whether it's around a campfire, or in the biggest club downtown.) Watch for, listen for, and feel out people's HONEST reactions. Try to read between the lines (if you will). Look for shivers and "WOW". Notice which of your songs people perk up for if you're playing shows in a background context. Always have a focus on making outstanding music that moves people, gets people excited, grabs people's hearts and refuses to let go.
- 5 years ago, a lot of records by independent artists sounded just "ok." Not anymore – anyone with a snowball's chance has music that is (to an extent) well recorded, well produced, and pretty much up to commercial standards. I don't care if you're the weirdest, most off the beaten path indie artist in history, there's still an element of quality that people expect when they press play – if it's not there, they will move on no matter how much they might have enjoyed your music in the right context. Make sure your drummer is good enough. If he's not don't use him for the record. Make sure everyone who's playing on your album is a top notch musician. So if you're working in a home studio, read and learn about how to record different instruments, learn some tricks of the trade, and A-B your stuff with commercial music you want to emulate – try to get it to the point where you can't tell the difference… maybe get a pro to mix the first few songs. Most of the information artists need to make MASSIVELY better recordings is available for free online.
- Focus on every aspect of your live show and PRACTICE a lot! A live show is the BEST place to make a REAL connection with fans. If you're delivering in away that floors your audience, that makes them want to tell everyone they know about you because it will make THEM look good, then you're doing your job. Granted, sometimes a show takes place in the wrong venue contextually. At a restaurant where everyone's on a date, it could harder to get enough attention from the audience to turn them into evangelists for your act, but regardless of the venue, EVERY show from a performance standpoint, should be stunning and extraordinary.
These are the ones that I feel are most important, and these 4 things are always (in one form or another) a major part of my goals for the quarter and goals for the year. About 2 months ago, I started the online promo and marketing journey – (up till now I've been almost exclusively focused on music creation and playing enough money gigs to pay the bills in the meantime) – I can't wait to get into this side of things more deeply.
Again, thanks to everyone who contributed

Couldnt agree more with the 'song on the verge' idea… this goes back to an article that Mike Venti published on MicControl a week or so ago called 'Learning How To Listen'. This is a critical part of finishing up the songwriting, frankly one that Ive always struggled with, which is learning to listen to others reactions of your music. http://miccontrol.com/micschool/learning-when-to-...
Thanks for contributing your ideas Aaron!
Thanks. Great concise article. Everything about that rings true. Certainly a skill I will make my best effort to focus on more as time goes on.
Again, thanks for this post as well! I'm inspired – will absolutely follow through on every applicable idea.
Where do I get good music blogs and marketing audiobooks?
For marketing audiobooks, Id recommend checking out iTunes, they seem to have a great collection of audiobooks available. For book ideas, check out this article we just published last week (look at the comments section, TONS of book ideas there): http://bit.ly/eLtMoA
As for music blogs – we here at MicControl are a music blogging community. If you are looking for some great music blogs to start with, Id highly recommend checking out both the MicBlogs and MicSchool sections and looking through all of the great articles contributed by our members. If you find someone you really enjoy, you can click their name at the top of the article and it will bring you to their profile which contains all of the articles they have contributed to MicControl, along with contact info for how to find their blogs/ social networking profiles elsewhere.
Hope that helps! Thanks for checking out this article!
Jon
Set yourself goals each month. Review them. Modify them. REWARD yourself for achieving them.
Definitely a great idea, thanks for contributing!

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
