'Hide And Seek For Six' by The Cries Of

This album is an unfortunate victim of weak vocals. The music throughout is actually quite good- acoustic folk driven by wire-brush snare hits, acoustic guitars, and a smooth bass. There are even times when string sections have been brought in to really up the intensity of the music. The songwriting is even solid throughout this album, with songs that feel well developed and well layered. Each song is tight, and well performed- the band seems to have a lot of chemistry, which increases the energy of the otherwise soft songs. The lyrics are also very well put together. At times they are narrative, other times they are not, but the lyrics seem to always have an insightful nature to them. A highlight for me was the track Forgive and Forget when he sings 'I remember when your father passed away, you held me hand as you looked over his body, you looked down at me as you wiped away your tears, because you didn't want me to see your fears'. But here is where I found the music to be most troubling. Although the music itself is really good, the lyrics are really good, and the songwriting is also really well done, the fact that I couldn't hear the vocals through most of the album made it hard for me to truly enjoy listening to this album. In fact, the reason I know that they lyrics are so insightful, is that I had to read them along with the music because all I could hear was a soft drone. It felt to me that if the lead singer actually pushed out the vocal parts as opposed to just breathing so much of what was written, it would be much more distinguishable and enjoyable. The Cries Of is a talented band who have created some beautiful music on Hide And Seek For Six. The only thing holding back this music from being great is the underworked vocals.
