Blood, Fire & Dust

You Owe Me

Paul Chesne has an interesting thing going on. He is country, but he's not quite country. He is also southern rock, blues. and gospel, but then again, he doesn't quite fit into any of these categories either. Paul Chesne is most definitely a genre bender, but his vocal style, his presence and his excellent songwritting skills remain consistant through every song, no matter what the style of the particular song is. As a songwritter, Paul seems to have spent a lot of time honing and developing his skills, which have allowed him to articulate his concepts and lyrics into very matured songs (either that, or he is a naturally talented songwritter, which is always a possiblitiy). These songs really do transcend the typically songwritting. Each song is very well developed, from the lyrics, to the music itself, to the melodies and harmonies. Speaking of the melodies and harmonies, Paul is also a very talented singer. This aspect of Paul is the only part where I found an obvious influence- George Thorogood. To me, this vocal style gave the music a real edge to it. Paul's presence as a vocalist only helps to push the energy of the already upbeat, and at times grooving rock/country/blues sound (think of the upbeat grove of Eric Clapton's Lay down Sally). There is a certain growl in his voice, similar to George Thorogood, and an underlying confidence that pulls the listener right in; it helps Paul present his music and his lyrics in a way where the emotions are really felt as opposed to just being described. As musicians, Paul Chesne and his band are all really solid. Throughout the album the band is always tight, showing a high level of professionalism and dedication that is not often heard. The sound is a dense wall of layered instrumentation. While chords are being held by an organ, the guitar may be playing a soft, funky upstroke style, all the while the bass is bouncing around keeping the energy high. Let one thing be clear: Paul Chesne may be a country man, be he can absolutely rock with the best of them. This album is gem! It is the perfect example of the kind of high quality musicians that exist around the world, whose music can move you, if only you had an easy way to find it.
