skipdawg Skip-Dawg sent us a copy of his LP "We Will Rise" for review on the blog. I checked it out and here's what I thought: Lyrics Skip-Dawg has above average lyrics that can be somewhat weighted down with slightly irrelevant, elementary rhymes from time to time, but he seems to use them in a playful manner which helps to boast his upbeat personality. At other times, Skip-Dawg shows off his talent by using complex rhymes and heavy lyrical content to depict his true emotions. Production With the exception of the first track (produced by G-Man of Hypasounds) the entire ablum is produced by Beatgods. The production isn’t anything out of the ordinary but provides great beats for a CD that will get Skip-Dawg noticed and doesn’t overshadow his flow and lyrical ability. One track that stood out in particular was “Never Knew” which sounded like the title track on The Game’s "Doctor’s Advocate" produced by J.R. Rotem. Also, “Back Home,” “Everybody Gather Around,” and “Skip to the Floor” stuck out to me compared to the other tracks on the CD. Songs The content of this album is where it gets interesting. While Skip-Dawg touches on some of the typical topics such as his superior talent, women, etc. he hits a much more serious note talking about his medical history – his lungs have collapsed dozens of times, requiring five major surgeries, thirteen chest tubes, and other complications over the past 15 years. Skip-Dawg shows his very unique past that has required strength and perseverance to get to the stage in his career (and life) that he is at. In “That High” Skip-Dawg rhymes about how difficult it was being repeatedly hospitalized and having to live off medication. As his problems continue the line becomes blurred over which is worse – the disease or the cure. You know you look bad when every single time, Someone walks in your room they start to cry, I’m not proud but I ain’t gonna lie, Sometimes my circumstance made me wish to die, You can’t talk because you breath more, The more that you breathe the more you bleed more, The more that you bleed the more you need more, Units transfused they keep feedin’ more. The subject matter is very heavy at times but have no fear, Skip-Dawg still brings upbeat tracks that focus on lighter content such as in “Skip to the Floor.” Get around me, get crowded, Get loose, get low, get rowdy, I like it when girls dance so close, I can tell if shorty got an inny or an outtie, When I come on through with the quickness, Get up and jump like a gymnast. Conclusion Overall, Skip-Dawg puts together an album that really gives you a feel for his personality and a look into his past and the struggles he has faced. I would be interested in seeing where Skip-Dawg goes from here, it would be interesting to see him play around with his flow and see what kind of new subject matter he incorporates on his next album.
