Lorraine Leckie's latest album 'Four Cold Angels' features a photograph on the cover, where she is sitting in an electric chair, surrounded by her bandmates. The combination of this and the fact that she calls her band 'Her Demons', I thought I was getting myself into some gothic rock, something more along the lines of Marilyn Manson. But thankfully, this is not the case what-so ever. Sure, Lorraine covers some darker topics, but I found it easier to compare her to the likes of Neil Young and Crazy Horse than Marilyn Manson. The type of dark topics that she covers are more in line with Neil Young and his ability to display an emotion through words. The music is deeply rooted in folk rock, with the grungy, scratchy sounding guitar, heavy hitting drums, and rocking riffs that feel as if they were pulled straight out of the 70's. And Lorraine's voice is interesting to say the least. It is not the greatest voice, but it works as a force over the music- again similar to Neil Young. The melodies are nicely put together and work well with the music. I found that the melodies were very simple, but not overly so, as to take away from the music. With this style of music, simple melodies such as the ones displayed on Four Cold Angels help to put the lyrical content in the spotlight, and with a lyricist such as Lorraine, this is the way it should be. These songs are musically average, but as a concise piece with a message they are quite successful. Overall this music is a great throwback to the early years of folk rock. Each song has a nice rock groove to it and Lorraine works quite well as the head of such a heavy band. Her personality, lyrical abilities and vocal presence all work together to create something that is interesting to listen to, as opposed to being more of just the same.
