(Rush)
(Gravity- acoustic)
As promised, I have some music to share today that is a little more relevant than 'tetris with lyrics' (see 2 posts below). The breakfast is a rock/ funk/ jam group from East Haven, CT.
*START OF RANT*
I typically find myself underwhelmed by the musicianship and songwritting abilities of the many bands who have been inspired by the likes of Phish, The Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic or any of the other genre-blending, improv-loving group. I find that many newer bands don't take the time to craft well written songs with any sort of real musical depth, but rather spend more time 'jamming' to simple funk based riffs with a now stereotypical airy/ echo-y guitar.
*END OF RANT*
This is where I think the breakfast has risen above the rest. From the songs of theirs that I have heard such as Living daylights, there is a clear musical talent from this band. This songs displays a powerful Metal-esk song with a nicely harmonized guitars and keyboards, layered, harmonized vocals and solid rhythm section. Not to mention one major thing, their guitar player can ACTUALLY PLAY!!! Now not every song has a metal edge to it, in fact most of their songs do not. Songs such as The Sound give a very widespread panic/ string cheese incident feel with the lighter chords and melody, but still with solid musicianship creating an interesting canvas for a solid groove to make an appearance.

I actually grew up with Tim, the guitarist. They're a great band, but they need to play Providence more often (if any of you from the Breakfast are reading this, Century Lounge re-opened and Jake's is now a music venue, come back to PVD!).
